The Post Where We Link to Stuff You May or May Not Find Interesting and/or Amusing
Well, That’s Depressing…. (John Armstrong)
“Most churches are losing members faster than they are gaining.”
Silver lining: This spells the end (I hope) of “cultural Christianity” here in the U.S. Those who remain will be those who are serious about their faith.

A View from the Other Side (Tall Skinny Kiwi)
Much has been said about a new upswing in Calvinism. Articles have appeared in Christianity Today and Time discussing this. Men like John Piper and Tim Keller have an enthusiastic following. Heck, we even celebrated John Calvin’s 500th B’day recently. But not everyone is so taken with the theologian from Geneva (or his theological legacy). Or, are these criticisms unfair? What do you think?

You and Your Technology Hatin’ Ways (Fors Clavigera)
We’ve all been there. How many times do you check your email during the day? In what sense could this become an “addiction”? I mean, I know it’s not drugs or alcohol, but….

Who Do You Mean by “We”? (Michael J. Gorman)
I’ve said the opening words of the title of this post before, verbatim. Let me point out that I am a veteran and am no pacifist. But we Americans can quickly confuse “Americanism” and Christianity. When we enter a church, I hope our nationality becomes a distant second to our identity as Christians.

Greetings. Found your blog through twitter. I think you found me on twitter from my posts while at the A29 conference. Anywho, I read your link for the New Calvinism. I don’t think the criticism was “correct,” but the guy had some good points. Especially about the point of “it’s all about the big hairy guy.” Yeah, I think sometimes the reformed church leaders can be worshiped. On the other hand, reformed theology ought to bring humility to all aspects of one’s life.
Nice site. God bless!
Jonathan – thanks for stopping by the site. Hopefully you’ll find some helpful posts here.
Seminary Nerd – I found myself agreeing with some of Andrew Jones’s critiques. In my opinion, however, these are not necessarily problems spawned by Calvinism (a robust view of the sovereignty of God) per se, but can come anywhere a specific system of theology is held up as the end-all, be-all without humble interaction with other theological systems.
Agreed. No theological “system” perfectly captures Scripture; though some do a better job than others.
I read this in Deep Church recently:
“Having the ‘proper confidence’ makes us gentle with other believers who have different perspectives on the Bible and truth. Recognizing the influence of sin on us, we realize that we don’t always see clearly and that our theological positions may not explain biblical truth in the fullest. We are open to learning from other traditions, believing that their perspective may be helpful to us…
Multiperspectivalism reduces pride, making us cognitively modest.”
