Recently I got to sit down in the video studio with Jared Wilson and talk with him about his new book, Your Jesus is Too Safe and why young pastors need to be aware of a new kind of legalism creeping into the church. I love Jared’s transparency and his passion for churches to live & preach the gospel.
For me, the most compelling part of our time together was Jared’s description of what it looks like when pastors and ministry leaders experience what he calls a “gospel renaissance” in their lives. Doing ministry out of that place is the hope and prayer of my life and my deep desire for all the pastors I know.
Take a look and be sure check out Jared’s book.
Of course, I’d love to hear about your own gospel renaissance, as well.

Jared writes regularly at The Gospel-Driven Church.

1. Did Jared get his title from the Chronicles of Narnia?
2. How did he do his research? That is, did he go to a lot of churches and listen to sermons? If not, how?
3. I love his use of Spurgeon’s comparing the Gospel to a Lion. I read that years ago and it has been my touchstone.
4. Any sermon dripping with grace and power is gospel based and will discomfort the comfortable, and comfort those in misery. I suspect Jered’s sermons reflect this principle. JMac, every word you’ve spoken in my presence has reflected this.
5. The scourge of the church throughout all time is Bible illiteracy. As one many said, if all Christians would simultaneously blow the dust off their Bibles, we would experience a nuclear winter.
Keep up the good fight!
1. Jeff, can you believe that quote (Aslan isn’t safe, but he’s good) isn’t in the book? And I’m a huge Lewis fan.
But no, the title didn’t come from that line.
2. My “research” comes from about 12 years in the attractional church world, having been on staff and in membership in “seeker churches” all that time. After that it comes from podcasts and reports from blog readers.
Totally with you on biblical illiteracy. This is something we touched on in the live interview at the quarterly event.
Thanks for your feedback, Jeff!
Is that a real beard on Jonathan McIntosh or was that scribbled on with a sharpie for the video?
Jeff – thanks for the encouragement.
Scott – it’s more of a sponge; they sponge on “beard” before important shoots.
